Recycling, Trash, and Yard Waste Collection
About Recycling, Trash, and Yard Waste Collection
The City of Rockville provides weekly curbside recycling, trash, and yard waste collection for single-family homes and most townhouses within city limits. Trash and recycling billing is automatically included on each resident’s Montgomery County property tax bill.
Use our address finder at www.rockvillemd.gov/services to determine if you live within Rockville city limits. Businesses, apartments, and condominiums are not serviced by the city and must comply with Montgomery County requirements.
Tips for Weekly Collections
- Place recycling and trash carts at the curb or alleyway by 6 a.m. on your collection day.
- Place yard waste at the curb (not in the alleyway).
- Position carts with the wheels facing the curb and the lid opening toward the street.
- Do not block mailboxes or driveways.
- Remove carts from the curb or alleyway within 24 hours of collection.
- Bulk waste, metal, electronics, and large branches are collected by appointment only. Request a special collection to schedule.
Recycling Collection

Place recyclables in your brown recycling cart. Extra recyclable items can be placed next to the cart. Avoid placing unaccepted items in your recycling cart, as they can disrupt the recycling process and damage equipment. When in doubt, throw it out—place questionable items in your trash cart. Do not rely on recycling symbols or numbers on packaging, as they do not always indicate an item is recyclable by the city.
Trash Collection

Place trash in your gray trash cart. Up to five additional trash bags may be set next to the cart. Any items beyond this require you to request a bulk waste collection.
Medication may be disposed of in your regular trash or dropped off at the prescription drug drop box located in the front lobby of the Rockville City Police Station.
Yard Waste Collection
Yard waste must be placed in biodegradable paper lawn bags or 32-gallon trash cans. Each bag or bin must not exceed 50 pounds. Residents are not required to label their yard waste cans, and the city does not provide yard waste labels or stickers.
Do not dump yard waste or leaves in storm drains, and do not mix yard waste with other types of materials. Large, storm-related tree debris will be collected, but it may take several weeks for crews to collect throughout the city.
Save money and support a healthy yard by grass-cycling, mulching leaves, or composting. Free wood and wood chips are available for residents to cut and haul away at the city’s maintenance facility, located at 14625 Rothgeb Drive.
Collection Schedule
Determine your weekly collection day for your recycling, trash, and yard waste by entering your address into the Find Your Collection Day tool.
Hazardous Materials
The city no longer collects household hazardous waste items, including oil-based paints, cleaners, grease, oils, batteries, and pesticides. These items, which contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable, or reactive ingredients, must be taken to the Montgomery County Transfer Station. An updated list of accepted items is available on Montgomery County’s hazardous waste page. Be sure to place liquids and chemicals in their original containers or in clearly marked containers. All containers should be placed in a box labeled “HAZMAT.”
