Rockville Names Dufek as Deputy Chief of Police 

New Hire Brings 25 Years of Experience in Law Enforcement 

Barry Dufek has been named the Rockville City Police Department’s next deputy police chief, Chief Jason West announced. He officially joined the force on Monday, Sept 29.

The new deputy chief will be sworn in at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7 in the Mayor and Council chambers at City Hall, 111 Mayland Ave.

Dufek brings 25 years of law enforcement experience to the role. He began his public safety career in Virginia as an emergency communications dispatcher before becoming a deputy sheriff at age 21. 

Over the course of his career, Dufek has held roles in patrol, street crimes, traffic and motor units, internal affairs, background investigations, and criminal investigations. He has overseen both patrol operations and administrative functions, including property and evidence, quartermaster duties, and accreditation. 

He also served as a team supervisor on the Critical Incident Response Team, a regional task force that investigates officer-involved shootings, in-custody deaths and officer suicides. 

Dufek is a graduate of the FBI National Academy’s 281st session and holds a master’s degree in public safety from the University of Virginia. He has risen through the ranks in two Virginia agencies, most recently serving as chief of police for the Town of Purcellville.
