Mattie J.T. Stepanek Park
Features
Mattie J.T. Stepanek Park is a 26.29-acre recreation hub located at the north end of the King Farm neighborhood. It opened in 2008 and was dedicated in honor of Mattie J.T. Stepanek, a poet and peace advocate. The park features the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Peace Garden, which includes a life-size bronze statue of Mattie and his service dog, Micah, along with three outdoor stone chess boards. In 2024, a labyrinth with a symbolic flame of hope was installed. Mattie’s quotes are displayed on benches and plaques throughout the park.
Plenty of parking is available for easy access. Paved paths wind through the park, perfect for a leisurely stroll, with benches and drinking fountains along the way for a well-deserved break. There’s no shortage of fun activities: a playground with separate sections for different age groups, outdoor fitness equipment for a quick workout, and a grilling area with picnic tables for a fun cookout.
The park is also packed with exciting amenities for sports enthusiasts! You’ll find three lighted tennis courts, perfect for a friendly match, and four lighted pickleball courts for some fast-paced fun. There are two lighted basketball courts where you can shoot some hoops, plus two premier Bermudagrass fields ideal for football or other sports. The park also features a versatile soccer/multi-use field, well-suited for a variety of sports. For something a little different, try the Bankshot court for a unique twist on basketball or challenge a friend to a game at the outdoor ping pong table!
The two premier fields can be used for football, soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, rugby, and more. These fields receive a high level of maintenance, are completely fenced and locked, and are primarily used for league play. They are available for permitted use by individuals or organizations only when city- sponsored leagues, activities, or events are not scheduled. Visit the Rent an Athletic Field page to learn more about reserving a premier field.
Lastly, the fenced dog park is the perfect spot for your pup to run and play off-leash! The dog park features separate areas for small and large dogs, each with a shaded shelter. While your dog has fun, you can relax at one of the picnic tables or benches. There are also drinking fountains for the dogs and waste stations for easy cleanup. Dogs are only allowed off-leash inside the dog park. Visit the Dog Parks page for rules and contact information in case of any animal-related issues.
